Surprise Beauty!
July 21, 2020 In Education Leisure Nature Product Photography No Comment

As a portrait artist, I was pretty sure I knew a lot about beauty… I found out this summer that there is a lot more to learn! Guess what? There is a gorgeous flower on our planet that blooms only ONCE a YEAR, for a few hours, and at night.

If you would see this cactus plant at any other time during the year, you would see a “plain Jane” looking hanging plant. And yet, deep within is this AMAZING beauty. The plant seems to be very shy, as it only shows this beauty AT NIGHT, and only for a few hours.

I wonder how many of us hide our beauty, consciously or subconsciously?

It began with a tree in a parking lot…
June 26, 2018 In Uncategorized No Comment

Yes, it began with a tree in a parking lot.  I was scouting for interesting places to take portrait shots for a bar mitzvah, and I saw this tree… I had some fantasies about how I might use the tree as a transformative element.  Thankfully, it worked!  You can see that the group of siblings looks like it is in a clearing of a forest, instead of in a parking lot off Rte. 9 in NJ.  Then, I did similar “magic” on the whole family group… and thought it was perfect, until someone pointed out that one of the sons was missing from the picture!  So, I added him in… it’s mostly believable, right?

Anatomy of a Painting
June 13, 2018 In Uncategorized No Comment

Our recent iteration of our “Flower Girl” has drawn some attention and questions.  Even after people realize that it is a composite, they’re still not sure how certain things were accomplished.

So here is how we did it:

  1.  We began with a beautiful photographic image.
  2. The image of the girl was extracted from the background, and hand-painted in Corel Painter.
  3. The background was hand painted from scratch, using a color palette taken from the girl.
  4. The floor is a continuation of the background, with a soft pink layer in Photoshop, again, taken from the palette.
  5. We made a “reflection” of the girl by copying the layer of the girl and flipping it vertically and lowering the opacity.
  6. The shadow under the girl is a layer of black blur, then blended with the floor.

I still LOVE the original photograph.. I’m not advocating to paint every image that comes out of the camera, but I just want to stay open to the possibilities where painting can enhance an image.

Robbie’s Run 2018
May 29, 2018 In Help Others Leisure Sports No Comment

We are so excited about participating in Robbie’s Run this year!  Robbie was a beautiful, athletic nine-year-old who suffered a cardiac incident on the baseball field.  His cardiologist father was there, but unable to help his son without a defibrillator.  In Robbie’s memory, his parents created the Forever 9 Robbie Levine Foundation which raises money for portable AEDs (defibrillators) for schools and public places.

The run takes place this Sunday, June 3, in Merrick Long Island.  We are grateful to our friends at Access Optical for introducing us to this wonderful cause.

Marathon Sunday
November 6, 2017 In Fashion Portraits No Comment

Yes, the bar mitzvah boy was the real star, but just between you and me, his sister stole the show!!

We are SO proud of Shalane Flanagan for winning the marathon yesterday!  Her achievement is certainly inspiring!  While Shalane was making history, Dell River Imagery was hosting a bit of a marathon of its own!  We usually limit portrait sessions to one per day, but we figured that Marathon Sunday was the perfect time to stretch our photographic muscles… Bridal prep in the morning, and a bar mitzvah in the afternoon.  It’s wonderful to share people’s happiest moments!

LOVE these shots… especially the middle one! Thinking about Mr. Right, no doubt!
